Tips for Maintaining Work-Life Balance During a Global Pandemic

Being a hard worker is a good thing. It’s great to be reliable and servant-hearted and to care about doing your job well. These individuals help their companies thrive and encourage their coworkers. However, it’s all too easy for these excellent employees to ride the slippery slope to burnout, fatigue, or the practice of defining their entire worth from their work. Hopefully, these tips for maintaining work-life balance can protect all the good workers out there from this fate.

Make your schedule reflect your priorities

When we write out our schedules, we tend to note only our work-related meetings and phone calls and, occasionally, events like classes, appointments, or dates. Because of that, we often feel as if we don’t have time to sit and relax, read a book, or take part in a hobby that we love. But if penciling in meetings helps to ensure we go to them, why shouldn’t the same principle work for penciling in time to relax?

If you’re a good worker, you tend to be good at following a schedule. Use your skills to your advantage. By setting aside this time in writing, you’ll remind yourself that the things that are important to you are just as worthwhile as the things that are important to your company.

Set boundaries

Good workers are often selfless, desiring to give their all to relieve the burden on others. This is a valuable trait and indicative of a strong individual. However, even the greatest human strength has limits, and even the best worker can’t do everything. Trying to do everything will inevitably lead to mistakes and forgotten tasks.

Take some time to evaluate what you can reasonably finish in a day without undue amounts of stress. And be honest with yourself about that second part. Keep in mind the things you need to remain healthy, such as sleep and spending enough time with friends and family. From here, set and communicate boundaries. This may be something as simple as establishing a firm clock-out time every day or turning down an extra responsibility.

Make winding down a routine

When you’re invested in your work, it can be hard to set it aside at the end of the day. Fortunately, humans are creatures of habit. Just like we can train ourselves to wake up at 5 a.m. every morning, we can train ourselves to relax at 5 p.m. every evening. Intentionally taking steps to help us relax at the same time every day will trick our bodies into relaxing, making it easier to take our minds off work.

Maintaining a work-life balance can be challenging, but challenging doesn’t mean impossible. Challenging means that it takes a little more effort. If you’re a hard worker, you know about effort. It’s time to take steps to build yourself up so that you can keep building up your company and others.
