Fiverr Now Offers “Freelancer As A Service” Subscription Option

Fiverr now enables subscriptions for freelancers on its platform. In a stark move away from its “gig” roots, the platform now enables companies to work with freelancers on long-term engagements. As more big businesses commit to hiring freelancers, this kind of change is likely welcome. 

Freelancers have long worked with companies on an ongoing basis using the retainer model. It seems that Fiverr subscriptions are a repeat of the retainer, albeit on Fiverr’s large marketplace with all the same conveniences. 

“In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, more businesses are tapping into remote, freelance talent than ever before. Managers have become comfortable managing remote talent and businesses have realized that by working with freelancers, they are able to increase their agility and flexibility, which allows them to scale quickly” said Micha Kaufman, Fiverr CEO in a press release. “However, every business is built differently and has needs that are unique to them. Subscriptions gives our community members control over how they want to work together and empowers them to work in ways that best suit their needs.”

In a statement, the company said Subscriptions were built to let freelancers earn consistent revenue. Since many already work with the same client on multiple gigs, the Subscriptions process smooths everything out for both parties. 

Subscriptions are open to 8 types of freelancers right now

With subscriptions, freelancers can offer either 3 or 6 month subscriptions, which can later be renewed. But it’s not yet available for all workers on Fiverr’s platform. As of right now, it is only available in eight categories:

  1. SEO
  2. Virtual assistants
  3. Voice over services
  4. Video editing
  5. Social media advertising
  6. Social media marketing
  7. Architecture and interior design
  8. Sound mixing and mastering

If you aren’t in those categories, you can’t offer subscriptions at this time through Fiverr. In a statement, the company said “Over time, the feature will be rolled out to other categories across the platform.”

A race to the bottom?

Within the Subscriptions feature is the ability to add a discount to a subscription. The company’s press release indicates this is an optional feature, but its existence could cause pressure on freelancers to lower rates. This comes as a study found freelancers are already working more and making less than they did pre-pandemic. With a one-click discount feature, clients may pressure freelancers into lowering rates further for the promise of ongoing work. 

Fiverr’s launch of Subscriptions comes after its launch of Milestones, a micropayment feature. This feature lets clients break down larger projects into individual pieces, paying as freelancers deliver each piece without committing to a whole project. There are a lot of benefits to this model: freelancers can focus on the work they like to do and clients have an easier time managing a lot of moving parts. However, it could also put additional pressure on freelancers to be the cheapest out there, since each individual piece is broken down and you can’t necessarily see the whole project in context.
